'''Thapa''' is a surname of large number of people of Nepalese origin. '''Thapas''' could be found throughout Nepal and India, but their origin is supposed to be in Western region of Nepal. Over a period of time, this community has spread to many parts of the world.
THAPA is a surname of people from Nepal, living in western part of the country. There are Thapa Chhetri (Aryans) and Thapa Magar (Mongolians). Thapas became popular during the period of Shah dynasty, being prime minister of the country, fighting alongside king and Showing their loyalty towards the king and to the country, as proved by BHIMSEN THAPA. At the same time they were also regarded as the best warriors. AMAR SINGH THAPA and BHAKTI THAPA proved this during Anglo- Nepal WAR.

People from the Thapa clan from MAGAR Tribe mainly took to the profession of soldiery in large numbers and have earned laurels unparalleled in world history. The THAPA clan of MAGAR tribe played the major role in expansion of territories of Nepal. With the arrival of British Colonists in Asia, they also found suitable preferential employment in the British Army because of their better skills at soldiery. As member of the Birtish Army and the Indian Army, the members of THAPA clan have taken part in both great world wars and several conflicts including Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.
In India, due to better opportunities and better social egalitarian conditions the members from the THAPA are doing well in several fields outside the traditional roles of their brave ancestors. While in Nepal under the Monarchy, the THAPA from Magar tribe were marginilised. While Nepal has a democratic government now, the bane of castesim continues to ail Nepal. The groups(so called '''Bahun''' and '''Chetri''') that benefited due to the HINDU system of hierarchical casteism continue to deny equal opportunities to other groups. The corrupt and unjust casteism has resulted in Nepal becoming one of the least developed and poorest country in the world.
