Development

DAM 999 is the result of inspiration of many real life incidents. The movie is a tribute to the 250,000 souls who lost their lives in the 1975 Banqiao Dam disaster in China[6]. , through this film Sohan Roy also wants to convey the psychological stress every individual experiences by restricting one’s feelings and desires. One cannot go on for long without expressing one’s feelings. Like a pressure mounted DAM, concealed emotions will explode at some point of time. Words are not enough to convey the aftermaths of this outburst. The audience will relate to the symbolic representation of a DAM across everyone’s mind. In a very simple way, DAM 999 is a story of nine characters and their emotions. The lives of all the nine characters revolve around a pressure mounted dam.The movie also shows the world the life of a mariner and the hidden beauty of the sea[7].

Sohan Roy introduces a new toy - 'Octopian Boy', a solid action figure, through this movie.[8].

Production

DAM 999 started its shooting at Alleppey, Kerala.[9]A lot of unexpected hurdles was faced by the crew with the progression of the movie, the issues began with one of the lead actors being banned from the film society due to some controversies, which ended up forcing makers of DAM 999 to pay a huge compensatory amount to the actor as he couldn't be included to be part of the project [10][11][12].While the prior issue sublimed, another lead character from India walked out due to disputes with the crew, while the shoot was in progress, making the movie come to a halt[13].The star cast of the movie was immediately altered and the initial sequences in Kerala was completed as planned[14] [15] .From various exotic locations such as Ooty in India, the shoot of the movie progressed to Fujairah,Dubai, where DAM999 has captured a couple of its sequences on the longest oil tanker vessel that has ever been filmed. The climax of the movie was compiled in an expensive set in Ramoji film city in Hyderabad, built by the Art Director Padmashree Thotta Tharani [16][17][18].DAM 999 is now in the phase of post production, the world wide release of the movie is expected in the near future.[19].
