"Pumped Up Kicks"
Song

"Pumped Up Kicks" is a song by American indie pop group Foster the People. The song debuted on YouTube in February 2010. It went viral after a popular German blog gave it a very positive review.[1] The song was released as the debut single from the group in 2011 and also serves as the lead single from the debut album, Torches. It is due for release in the United Kingdom on 19 June[2]; with the album Torches released the following week.

On 23 May 2011, BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James selected the song as his Single of the Week - which ran until 27 May. During this time, James released an accompanying video of him dancing to the song; which he entitled and promoted "The Bum Dance". The song premiered on Sirius XM Radio's Alt Nation channel since August 2010, with Seattle radio station KNDD having the terrestrial radio debut two months later.

The song placed at #32 in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2010, a big achievement due to the band being relatively unknown in Australia at the time. The band placed above the likes of Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire and Gorillaz.

Content

The music, written before the lyrics, is upbeat, with a heavy bassline and a mixture of acoustic and electronic elements. Jeffery Berg of Frontier Psychiatrist said, "I was so engrossed with the cheery melody of its chorus that it took me a few listens to discover that the lyrics suggest dark, Columbine revenge."[3] The song is about a troubled and delusional youth with homicidal thoughts. Mark Foster stated in an interview with KROQ-FM that the lyrics were written to "bring awareness" to the issue of gun violence amongst youth, which he feels is an epidemic perpetuated by "lack of family, lack of love, and isolation".[4]
