Jeb Burton (born John Edward Burton IV in Halifax, Virginia on August 6, 1992) is an American stock car racing driver who currently competes in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for Hillman Racing. He is the son of 2002 Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton, and the nephew of current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jeff Burton. Burton competed for several seasons as a regular driver at South Boston Speedway, a historic American racing circuit that his family has historically been known for competing at; he will move up to national touring series competition in 2012 as a teammate to his father.
Early career and personal life
Burton started his racing career in the NASCAR-sanctioned Whelen All-American Series at South Boston Speedway. He made his first start at the track, in the Limited Sportsman Series, in 2008, with his first full season of competition at the track coming in 2009;[1] this also saw his best finish in the track's season standings, finishing 4th at the end of the year. Burton moved up in 2010, competeing in the Late Model Series at the track during that season, and also in 2011.[2]
In addition to competing at South Boston, where both his father and uncle made a name for themselves in their early racing careers,[1] he competed regularly at Ace Speedway, Orange County Speedway, and other speedways in the south Virginia/central North Carolina area.[3]
In April of 2009, Jeb raced at Virginia International Raceway, being selected to compete as a guest driver in the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Series. Burton's guest driver status left him ineligible for points or prize money.[4] Jeb was able to qualify his State Water Heaters/Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation Jetta in the 9th position but finished the event in 22nd, suffering an accident with another driver that knocked him out of the race.[5]
Burton was educated at Halifax County High School.[6] Like his father, Burton is an avid outdoorsman and hunter.[7]
ARCA and NASCAR
Jeb made his debut in big-league stock car racing in 2011, competing in the ARCA Racing Series event at Berlin Raceway, starting 9th and finishing 21st in the event.[8] Later in 2011 he was briefly suspended by NASCAR and fined following an on-track incident in a heat race at South Boston Speedway.[9] He was penalised for throwing a cone at another competior's car following an accident; his father, also involved in the incident, was placed on probation.[10]
In January 2012, he announced that he would be competing for Hillman Racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series during the 2012 racing season, sharing a ride in the No. 27 truck with his father Ward.[11] Due to his lack of experience on large tracks, Burton is ineligible to compete at Daytona International Speedway;[12] he will make his debut in the series at Martinsville Speedway in the second race of the season.[13]
