Lascano is a small city in the Rocha Department of southeastern Uruguay. It is located at the junction of Route 15 with Route 14, 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from Arroyo Aiguá which is the border with Lavalleja Department. Its status was elevated to "City" category on 3 November 1952 by decree Ley No. 11.874.[1]

History

1875 map showing the estates on which Lascano was founded.

The town was founded in the fields of ranchers Don Francisco Fernández and Don Francisco Lascano in 1876. The estates were situated on what was called until then "Partido de las Tres Islas". Although Don Lascano had a much smaller portion of land, the village took on his name because of the way official papers were signed, and due to the analphabetism of Don Fernández. In 1880 it became part of the newly formed Rocha Department.[2]

Population

In 2004, Lascano had a population of 6,994.[3]
