Hemerocoetes artus is a duckbill of the genus Hemerocoetes, found only around the sub-Antarctic islands to the south of New Zealand, on muddy or sandy bottoms at depths of between 100 and 600 metres. Their length is between 10 and 25 centimetres.
Hemerocoetes artus is very similar to the closely related opalfish.
