John Thomas Hailer (born 1960)[1] is a global financial services executive, currently President and Chief Executive Officer of Natixis Global Asset Management – The Americas & Asia. Natixis Global Asset Management, or NGAM, is one of the world’s 15 largest asset managers, with more than $700 billion in assets under management globally.[2]

NGAM is a multi-boutique asset management firm with more than 20 affiliates in Asia, Europe and the United States that manage assets in different styles for both retail and institutional clients. NGAM is known for pioneering concepts such as Durable Portfolio Construction,[3] an investment process focused on producing consistent long-term returns regardless of market conditions by seeking to make risk the primary focus of asset allocation; to manage volatility by creating a portfolio that minimizes the impact of extreme market movements; and to enhance diversification by adding exposure to alternative investments and making smarter use of traditional asset classes.[4]

Natixis Global Asset Management is part of Natixis. Listed on the Paris Stock Exchange, Natixis is a subsidiary of BPCE, the second-largest banking group in France.[6]

Professional Background

Hailer was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Natixis Global Asset Management – The Americas & Asia in 2007.[7] He is responsible for NGAM’s distribution strategies worldwide and oversees the business activities of the firm’s asset management affiliates in the United States and Asia.[8]

Hailer joined the firm in 1999, and was named Chief Executive Officer of what was then known as IXIS Asset Management Advisors Group. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Natixis Global Associates in 2006.

Earlier, Hailer served as Senior Vice President of International Business Development for the Americas and Senior Vice President of Strategic Marketing with Fidelity Investments Institutional Services Company[9] from 1994-99, with responsibility for new business development in North America and Latin America and directing product and marketing development for institutional channels. He also helped the firm launch its first-ever series of closed-end mutual funds.[10]

Before joining Fidelity, Hailer was a Senior Vice President and Director of Retail Business Development for Putnam Investments,[11] with responsibility for the development of pricing models, product offerings and marketing strategies for multiple distribution channels as well as development of international products. Hailer began his career at Fidelity in 1986, selling corporate cash products, retirement plans and pension fund management services.[12]

Hailer has been highly visible in the media and at conferences, speaking on issues such as the economy, regulatory reform, corporate taxation, investments, future trends in retirement and other issues on such venues as CNBC[13], Fox Business News[14], Bloomberg TV[15] and NECN.[16]

He is also a prominent voice at the state and federal level on economic issues, including job creation and growth,[17] globalization,[18] infrastructure spending, regional economic cooperation[19] and regional economic development.[20]

Under Hailer’s leadership, Natixis has expanded its corporate philanthropy program,[21] establishing relationships with a variety of social services agencies, including hopeFound,[22] Strong Women Strong Girls,[23] Elizabeth Stone House,[24] Community Work Services,[25] Ellis Memorial,[26] St. Francis House,[27] Best Buddies International, Boston Medical Center and the Home for Little Wanderers.

Natixis is also the 2012 Presenting Sponsor of the Newport Jazz Festival[28] and the 2012 Berklee College Summer Music Series.

Personal Background

Hailer received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and government in 1983 from Beloit College,[29] which he served as a member of the Board of Trustees.[30] Hailer is a member of a number of civic and philanthropic organizations, serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Home for Little Wanderers, the oldest continuously operated children’s charity in the United States,[31] and as Chairman of the New England Council, a regional business and community interest organization.[32] He also is a member of the Board of Directors of Boston Medical Center[33] and serves as Co-Chairman of the Boston Financial Services Leadership Council.[34] Hailer frequently co-hosts the New England Cable News public affairs show, D.C. Dialogue.[35]

In 2012, Hailer was named a recipient of a Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus Good Guys Award for his work on behalf of victims of domestic violence and his efforts to promote hiring of women in the financial services industry.[36] In 2010, Hailer was honored by St. Francis House with its All the Way Home Award.[37]
