Biomatrica is a United States-based biotechnology company that develops and sells products and technologies for maintaining the stability of biological samples at ambient temperatures. The company offers inexpensive and sustainable alternatives to cold storage for preventing degradation of perishable biological samples, such as DNA, RNA, proteins, cells, and diagnostic assays. Biomatrica's products are used in areas such as pre-analytical sample collection, biobanking, forensics, and basic research.

History

Biomatrica was founded in 2004 by husband and wife scientists, Rolf Müller, PhD, and Judy Müller-Cohn, PhD. The couple had previously worked as molecular biologists at San Diego’s prestigious Scripps Research Institute and Salk Institute (Rolf Müller), and Mycogen/Dow Agrosciences (Judy Müller-Cohn).[1] [2]

The company’s ambient temperature storage technology was developed based upon the phenomenon of anhydrobiosis, the ability of some organisms to hibernate in a desiccated state during dry periods, and then reanimate upon contact with water.[1] Focusing their studies on microscopic, desert-dwelling creatures called Tardigrades, which undergo anhydrobiosis for up to 120 years, Biomatrica scientists identified how to chemically mimic the mechanism of anhydrobiosis. According to Rolf Müller, “What we create(d) is a thermostable, dissolvable glass that packages every single molecule in a sample.” [3] Following stabilization at room temperature with Biomatrica's technology, biological specimens can be rehydrated for subsequent studies with the addition of a few drops of water.

Products

The company's first product was a dry, synthetic polymer, "DNAgard" (originally SampleMatrix), a chemical formulation that stabilizes purified DNA at ambient temperature. In 2006, it was awarded the Most Innovative Product of the Year award from the San Diego non-profit science/business organization CONNECT. [4]

The following year, the company released RNAstable and CloneStable, dry chemical reagents optimized for stabilizing purified RNA and bacterial plasmid DNA, respectively.[5]

In 2007, the German biotechnology company, Qiagen GmbH, licensed DNAstable for sale under the trade name QIAsafe. Biomatrica and Qiagen subsequently co-developed QIAsafe Blood, an ambient temperature stabilization reagent for unpurified DNA in whole blood.[6] [7]

Also in 2007, Biomatrica released a line of molecular and forensic assay enhancement products. The first, PCRboost, was developed for enhancement of PCR performed on degraded and trace DNA samples.[5]

Biomatrica began commercialization of preanalytical products in 2009 with the launch of its “gard” product line. These products were designed to stabilize biological samples from collection to analytical testing, not only prior to long-term storage. This product line includes DNAgard Tissue and Cells, and DNAgard Blood.[5]

Liquid versions of DNAstable and RNAstable were launched as DNAstable LD and RNAstable LD in 2011 and 2012, respectively. These liquid products provide more flexibility for experimental formats, including those utilizing automated instrumentation.[5]

In 2012, Biomatrica launched VACUETTE DNAgard Blood Tubes, the company’s first product that allows collection of samples directly from patients. The collected blood can be preserved and shipped at ambient temperatures for up to 14 months with no loss in DNA integrity.[8]

Until this time, Biomatrica’s products had been made for research use only. Development in 2012 of a device for collection, ambient temperature shipment and storage of DNA from human saliva began the company’s first foray into the FDA-regulated medical device market. [9]

Partnerships and agreements

Licensing agreements for Biomatrica technologies were signed with the large German biotechnology company, Qiagen GmbH, in 2007 and 2009, [7]

Following the launch of DNAstable, the company gained the interest of major law enforcement organizations, such as the California Department of Justice, which sought to benefit from the new product through inexpensively stabilizing DNA samples from crime scenes for forensics purposes. Other major law enforcement organizations, including sheriffs’ departments in Orange County, CA Los Angeles, CA, and Palm Beach, FL, have adopted ambient temperature forensic sample management systems based on Biomatrica’s technologies.[1]

HMO giant, Kaiser Permanente adopted DNAstable for a large biobanking project in 2010.[10]

Also in 2010, Biomatrica signed a collaborative research and development agreement (CRADA) with United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) to develop and test new technologies for ambient temperature stabilization of clinical and biological samples. [11]

The same year, Biomatrica began selling a line of molecular research and forensic assay enhancement products. The first, PCRboost, was developed for enhancement of PCR performed on degraded and trace DNA samples.[5]

The company began commercialization of preanalytical products starting with the launch of DNAgard Tissue and Cells in 2009, and DNAgard Blood in 2010[5].

The same year, Biomatrica began a partnership agreement with the U.S. National Cancer Institute for biomarker stabilization and SAIC-Frederick to improve molecular analysis of tumors.[12]

In 2011, the company announced a strategic partnership agreement with In-Q-Tel, an independent, strategic investment firm that identifies technologies to support the mission of the U.S. intelligence community.[13]

Other prominent government agencies testing Biomatrica’s technology included NASA and the U.S. Navy.[14]

Notable company accomplishments in 2012 included a partnership with the European biomedical firm Greiner Bio-One for ISO 9001 manufacture of the company’s VACUETTE DNAgard Blood Tubes.[15]
