Sockpuppet investigation

Hi! I have some advice for you concerning the recent sockpuppet investigation where you were named.

The first two key points to understand are that sockpuppets act like non-sockpuppets and non-sockpuppets also act like non-sockpuppets. Until the investigation is complete, we simply don't know which you are.

The other thing to understand is that sometimes someone is named who isn't a sockpuppet. This can be alarming to someone who has not experienced it, but it is really no big deal. I have been named myself, and I use my real name on Wikipedia. No action will happen without evidence. That's why we use the word "investigation".

Because sockpuppets and non-sockpuppets act exactly the same, I am going to give you two messages. Please ignore the one that doesn't apply.

If you are not a sockpuppet: Relax. In a day or two there will be a finding of "no evidence of sockpuppetry". Don't bother trying to deny it, because you would deny it in exactly the same way if you were a sockpuppet. And please don't get upset with those who are investigating. They are just doing their job.

If you are a sockpuppet: Don't bother trying to convince anyone that you aren't one. Nobody is going to look at your denials. They will look at the evidence. Just pretend you read the paragraph above and followed my advice. Be aware that we may not catch you even if you are a sock, because we don't label someone as a probable sock unless we are pretty sure. If that happens, you still have a problem, because the things people create sockpuppets for (voting twice, evading bans, faking support...) are the same things that will get you caught.

I hope this helps... --Guy Macon (talk) 04:02, 30 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

After I wrote the above, I saw your further comments on the SPI page. Let me address them:
"I have not edited anything Himesh and his socks have edited.": Unless there is other evidence, such a finding that both of you are using the same computer, the above most likely means a "no evidence of sockpuppetry" finding for you. Be patient. There is no point in saying that you have not edited anything Himesh and his socks have edited, because you would say that if you were a sockpuppet. (Some socks are held in reserve for future use, so the lack of posts proves nothing either way.)
"Himesh and his sock have been blocked. Since I'm still editing I'm obviously not the same user." Maybe. Or maybe you are a sock that hasn't been blocked yet.
"Himesh never signs his posts and writes in broken English because he's illiterate or something. I've signed every one of my posts and have an adequate grasp of the English language.": Himesh is almost certainly faking poor language skills. He made a classic error. People who really have poor language skills get the simple words and sentences right and make errors on the big word ans complex sentences. Himesh spells "administrator" "appreciate" and "barbarians" correctly then misspells "sock". Same with grammar; he gets the things that people with poor grammar have trouble with right, and makes mistakes on things that they mostly get right. We cannot rule someone out just because they don't make the same error; the errors are almost certainly faked.
Again, relax. The system works pretty well. --Guy Macon (talk) 04:40, 30 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
