The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) created the Health Care Innovations Exchange to speed the implementation of new and better ways of delivering health care and reducing health disparities nationwide. Launched in 2008, the AHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchange offers health care professionals and researchers opportunities for sharing, learning about, and adopting evidence-based innovations and tools suitable for health care settings and patient populations.

Through the AHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchange Web site[1], professionals can:

  • Browse more than 775 searchable profiles that describe health care innovations on such topics as health information technology, nursing care, patient safety, cultural competence, and preventive services;[1]
  • Browse 1,525 searchable QualityTools that describe resources to help assess, measure, promote, and improve health care quality;[2]
  • Download articles and an adoption guide that provide support for implementing innovations;[3]
  • Share health care innovations with the larger community by submitting their innovations;[4]
  • Comment on innovations and share their experiences and lessons learned, resources and other perspectives.

The AHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchange offers opportunities for participants to learn from and share with innovators and other experts through interactive webinars and a web-based discussion series. The webinars feature issues in health care, such as medical information exchanges, using data for quality improvement, and learning from attempts. The web-based discussion series "Chats on Change" features health care topics such as the role of clinical nurse leaders as quality champions and effective provider-patient email.[5]

Two groups of experts ensure that the information and services on the AHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchange meets its users' needs. The Expert Panel provides guidance on strategy and direction while the Editorial Board provides guidance on innovation content and adoption and implementation strategies.[6]

Westat, under contract to AHRQ, operates the Health Care Innovations Exchange.
