"Brave"
Song

"Brave" is the lead single from the upcoming Sara Bareilles album The Blessed Unrest. The song was co-written by Sara Bareilles and Jack Antonoff from the band Fun. An official lyric video was premiered on April 17, 2013.[1] "Brave" was inspired by Sara's close friend who struggled with coming out.[2][3]

Promotion

SiriusXM station The Pulse premiered the single on April 17, 2013.[4] On April 23, 2013 Bareilles was interviewed and performed in SiriusXM's The Pulse studios.[5]

On April 25, 2013, Sara performed the song on The Today Show.[6] On April 29, 2013, Sara performed "Brave" and "Uncharted" on AXS Live.[7][8]

Critical reception

The song received mostly positive from critics. Tierney Sneed of US News stated that "Sara Bareilles's 'Brave' lends advice to someone struggling to come out with an important confession. Though anyone could relate, Bareilles had a particular audience in mind. Writing the song with Fun. lead guitarist Jack Antonoff, Bareilles says she was inspired by a close friend who was having trouble coming out about being gay."[2] The Advocate, a gay and lesbian magazine, called it "destined to become an LGBT anthem for the ages." Out and SheWired also picked up the song. Blogger popgoesthecharts also gave it a positive review, saying that "the song is very much different from a lot of her previous material. It’s, well, for lack of a better word, a “brave” choice to put out as the first single. There’s a really good energy about it; it’s extremely upbeat and has a great message to it. The verses are fast-paced (except for the second half of the second verse) and chorus, post chorus and middle 8 are sung at a more normal tempo. It’s rhythmic, it’s fun, it’s catchy. It’s going to be one of those anthem that gets picked up by social groups and I think it would serve a great purpose in some sort of anti-bullying campaign. It’s very, very good."[9]

Release

"Brave" was released digitally on April 23, 2013.[10]

Music Video

On April 25, 2013, it was revealed the music video for "Brave" is directed by Rashida Jones.[11] It is Jones' first project as director. Filmed in Los Angeles, the music video is scheduled to premiere May 14th, 2013.[12]

Charts

"Brave" debuted at #61 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.[13]
