Sergei Ivanovich Vasiliev (in Russian: Сергей Иванович Васильев; born in 1961 in St. Petersburg, Russia)[1] is the President of the Guild of Purveyors to the Kremlin and owner of Soyuz Corporation, a leader in palm oil industry in Russia and member company of the Guild of Purveyors to the Kremlin.[2]

Biography

Early Life and Education

Sergei Vasiliev was educated at the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, which trains specialists to serve on the civil and commercial fleet.[3]

Personal Life

Sergei Vasiliev holds permanent residence in the Netherlands but resides predominately in Moscow, despite Dutch immigration laws, which require one to be in the country the majority of the year.[4] Vasiliev is rumored to be “meticulous, vindictive and paranoid.”[3] At Soyuz, he has created a system of surveillance tracking all his employees using wiretapping.[3]

Career

Business

Sergei Ivanovich Vasiliev began his career in December 1987 at “Morskaya Chayka” (Seagull) Corporation.[1] Between 1987 and 2000, he created and headed a number of companies, the majority of which dealt with the import and trade of food commodities.[1] In 2002, Vasiliev established the Soyuz Corporation, which bears the stamp of the Official Purveyor to the Moscow Kremlin and is a leading producer of special-purpose fats for the Russian food industry.[5]

Political

The Guild of Purveyors to the Kremlin is an organization that awards its member companies the prestigious status of an “Official Purveyor to the Kremlin”.[2] In 2009, Sergei Vasiliev was appointed the President of the Guild.[1] Both the Guild of Purveyors to the Kremlin and the Soyuz Corporation are registered at the same address in Moscow and also share the same Deputy Head, Sergei Zichenko.[6] It is widely known that the head of both entities, Sergei Vasiliev, has a close relationship with a United Russia Deputy in the State Duma, Evgeny Federov.[6] These political connections meant that in early 2013, the Guild was able to push through new standards for the palm oil industry, which competitors claim were beneficial solely for Soyuz Corporation, and pushed out other small competitors in the industry.[2]

Controversy

Sergei Vasiliev also owns a number of firms in the Netherlands under the company Leaderland TTM B.V., which until 2012 was the holding company for Soyuz Corporation.[7] In 2013, Vasiliev dismissed his long-term associate and Soyuz minority shareholder (25%), Andrei Baranov, from all his leadership positions and attempted to acquire his shares in the company.[8] The latter claimed this was done in contradiction to Dutch law and legal proceedings were launched in the Netherlands in January 2014.[7] During the court case launched by Andrei Baranov against Sergei Vasiliev, media reports suggested that Vasiliev used various forms of intimidation to silence his former partner, including arson.[2] [3]

Awards

Sergei Vasiliev has received numerous awards from Russian officials and religious figures.[9] He has been awarded the Highest Public Award of the Russian Federation for the wealth and propensity of Russia in the sphere of food production.[5] Additionally, he has received the prestigious order badge from the Russian Orthodox Church.[9]
