Indiggo, consisting of the twin sisters Gabriela and Mihaela Modorcea (born June 7, 1983, in Romania),[4] are American singer/songwriters, who have been signed with Imagem since 2011, and reality television personalities.[1][5][6][unreliable source?][7]

Their published music includes the single "Be My Boyfriend" (Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Ariola, 2006), which charted in Germany, peaking at # 89. Their signing with international music label Imagem consists of a worldwide, multi-year publishing/grand rights deal. A sample from the twins' 'LA LA LA' can be heard on rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West’s ‘Watch The Throne’ 2011 album.

In 2006, they competed to represent Romania at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 7th out of 12 songs in the National Final. In 2008, they qualified for the top-40 semi-finals on Season 3 of America's Got Talent.

Early life

The twin sisters are from Transylvania, Brasov, Romania.[8] Mihaela is five minutes older than Gabriela.[9] They began studying piano and dance at the age of six.[8]

Career

Music

Discogs reported that they cut the CD album Indiggo (MediaPRO Music, 2000), and also the CD Maxi "Hip Hop Jam" (BROS Music, 2006) and the CD single "Be My Boyfriend" (Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Ariola, 2006).[10] "Be My Boyfriend" charted in Germany, peaking at # 89.[11]

In August 2011, international music publisher and label Imagem signed a worldwide, multi-year publishing/grand rights deal with the twins.[2][3][12]

What The New York Times described as a "moving sample" from Indiggo's "LA LA LA" can be heard on rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Murder to Excellence,” a song on the rappers' Watch the Throne 2011 studio album.[1][13][14] In 2011, the twins were also working on an album with American music manager David Sonenberg.[2][3]

Eurovision qualifications

In 2006, at the age of 20 the Indiggo twins competed to represent Romania at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest.[15][16][17] Singing the song "Be My Boyfriend" written by German songwriter Dieter Bohlen (which the Romanian Minister of Culture allowed them to use as their submission, granting special dispensation as otherwise only Romanian-composed music was allowed), they qualified for the final round in the National Semi-Final on February 24, and finished 7th out of 12 finalists in the National Final on February 26, having received a poor response from the judges but a better response in the televote.[18][19][20][21][16][17] The twins' mother, who managed the duo, threatened to sue the Romanian TV station TVR which ran the contest for 100,000 Euro, asserting that her daughters' fans had been unable to enter votes in the televote due to faulty phone lines managed by Voxline Communications Company, but the TV station did not alter the standings.[16][22] Voxline reserved the right to sue the twins for damages.[22]

The twins tried again the following year with "Love Struck", making it into the 24 finalists from the original field of 259 in the national competition organized by Romanian Television (TVR) to select the country's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2007.[23][24] However, they were disqualified[25][26] from the contest due to not showing up for rehearsals.[27][28][29] They also did not provide the instrumental version of their song in a timely fashion.[27] The duo also missed the music video filming and TV show for the promotion of their song, saying that they had some concerts in the United States.[30][31][32]

America's Got Talent

In 2008, Indiggo qualified for the top-40 semi-finals on Season 3 of America's Got Talent, an American television reality show talent competition. The show began with an audition in New York City, which the twins passed, being promoted to the next stage of Las Vegas callbacks.[33] The audience booed, and judge Piers Morgan called Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea "the worst dancers and the worst singers in the entire competition", but they were promoted in the competition to the semi-final Vegas round.[1][34][35][36][37][38][39] The New York Times described them as "America’s Got Talent punching bags".[1]

Movies and television

Gabriela Modorcea acted in the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj (2006), and in the Russian/Ukrainian film Lyubov v bolshom gorode.[40][41]

She also had a small role on the episode "Hothouse" of the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which first aired on NBC on January 13, 2009.[42]
