Born in Campsie, New South Wales, Mata'utia played his junior football for the South Newcastle Lions before being signed by the Newcastle Knights.

Mata'utia is the younger brother of St. George Illawarra Dragons player Peter Mata'utia, fellow Newcastle Knights player Chanel Mata'utia and is the older brother of fellow Knights player Sione Mata'utia.[2]

Playing career

In 2011, Mata'utia played for the Australian Schoolboys.[3]

In 2012 and 2013, Mata'utia played for the Newcastle Knights' NYC team[4][5] before moving on to the Knights' New South Wales Cup team in 2014.[6]

On 2 May 2015, Mata'utia played for Samoa against Tonga in the 2015 Polynesian Cup, making his international debut on the wing in Samoa's 18-16 win at Cbus Super Stadium.[7][8]
