Tanu Weds Manu: Returns is a Hindi romantic comedy film directed by Anand L. Rai. The film is a sequel to Tanu Weds Manu (2011), in which Kangana Ranaut and R. Madhavan reprise their roles from the prequel. The music and background score is composed by Krsna Solo [3] and the lyrics are penned by Raj Shekhar. The film received highly positive reviews from critics upon release and Ranaut's portrayal of a Haryanvi athlete in a double role garnered wide critical acclaim.[4][5][6] This film is believed to be better than the prequel.[7]
Plot
Four years into their marriage Tanu and Manu have some issues that need to be addressed. Instead of looking for an easy resolution, our lead couple – with their distinct personality types -- lets a typical marital discord mutate into a huge mess.
Tanuja Trivedi (Kangana Ranaut) is a rebel without a cause. She is very much the person she was four years ago – she still doesn’t worry about consequences. She has been lonely in the UK; her marriage doesn’t seem to have the same spark and when she thinks she has done her bit to save it, she decides to come back to Kanpur. Armed with the same spunk and charm and now some additional true English openness and “sophistication” – Tanu wants to find out if she still has the same allure of her single days.
Our quiet doctor Manoj Sharma (R Madhavan) in his reserved, restrained manner also thinks he has done his bit. The sensitive Manuji is now in love with a girl half his age and ready to give the hallowed institution of marriage another shot. He hopes that with a more adaptable spouse, he can be the loving/caring husband he aspires to be.
Every married couple has gone through a stage where they have wondered why the fizz in their marriage seems to be fizzling out? Every individual in a marriage, whether it is the husband or the wife, has wondered if they can still wield the same appeal they could before they got married and written off. Every spouse at some point looks for vindication – for a chance to prove that with a more understanding partner, the relationship has the ability to be extraordinary.
The fault is never ours; it is always the other who has faltered.
Tanu and Manu in an attempt to absolve themselves effect a chain reaction oblivious of the ramifications of their actions.
Tanu reconnects with her former lover Raja Awasthi (Jimmy Sheirgill) who was finally hoping to get married. Her other admirers, like the law student played by Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, become collateral damage and once scorned they can be dangerous.
Manu’s alliance with the state-level athlete Kusum, called ‘Datto’ because of her protruding teeth, spells doom for this young Haryanvi girl hailing from a typical patriarchal household.
Tanu and Manu misadventures, however, make for a fun journey. What makes the simple story remarkable is the performance by the supporting cast – Deepak Dobriyal as Manu’s friend belts out a solid portrayal. Jimmy Sheirgill and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub are underused but brilliant in their roles. Rajesh Sharma and Swara Bhaskar bring up the rear with robust cameos.

Production
Following the positive response to Tanu Weds Manu post release in February 2011, the team considered making a sequel to carry the story forward showing the next chapter of the couple's life. The lead couple Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut both announced their interest of being a part of a proposed sequel, months after the original's release.[9][10] In September 2011, Sunil Lulla of Eros International announced that they had signed on director Anand L. Rai to work on a second part of the film titled Tanu Weds Manu: Season 2.[11] Early reports claimed that the lead actors would be seen in dual roles, while it was also speculated that Shahid Kapoor may replace Madhavan in the lead role.[12][13] In January 2012, the project was postponed to allow Anand Rai to proceed with another venture Raanjhanaa (2013), while the makers also wanted Ranaut to finish her commitments with Krrish 3 (2013) as the sequel demanded a different look.[14][15]
Following the release and success of Raanjhanaa in July 2013, Anand Rai confirmed that the sequel to Tanu Weds Manu was still active and would feature the original cast in the leading roles, playing down reports that Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma were to replace them.[16][17] Screenwriter Himanshu Sharma began working on the film in July 2013 and revealed that only the first ten minutes would have a London backdrop, before the story returns to Lucknow, Kanpur and Delhi. He went on to confirm the working title, though added it potentially may also be known as Tanu Weds Manu Extra Large.[18] Pre-production continued through late 2013, with Ranaut's two-month trip to the USA delaying the start of the shoot in early 2014.[19] She later confirmed that she would play a dual role in the film, that of an athlete apart from Tanu, and the team scouted for a body double to be used in scenes featuring both characters.[20] Dhanush, who had worked in Raanjhanaa, was revealed to be playing a cameo appearance in the film.[21][22]
The team began filming in October 2014 in Lucknow, after a small launch ceremony. The first motion poster of the film was released on 23 March 2015 on the birthday of the leading actress, Kangana Ranaut at a special event in Delhi.[23]
Controversy
In May 2014, the producers of the original film, Sanjay Singh, Vinod Bachchan and Shailesh Singh filed a legal notice stating that the director did not have the rights to make a sequel without their permission. Anand Rai replied stating that the trio only had rights over the first film and no direct rights over sequels or the franchise. In a further reply, Bachchan revealed that they were interested in making a sequel and should have been approached ahead of Eros International.[24][25][26]

Reception
Critical reception
The film was critically acclaimed. Ranaut's double role was highly applauded by the critics. It has 95% favorable reviews and received a 7.4 out of 10 rating based on 30 reviews on TheReviewMonk,[31] an Indian film review aggregating site (similar to MetaCritic). Giving the film 4.5 stars out of 5,Srijan Mitra Das of The Times Of India said," Tanu Weds Manu Returns boasts one of the finest double roles ever in Hindi cinema. Alongside, Madhavan does a fine job as quiet, often morose, sometimes hopeful Manu." He also added," Aanand L. Rai merits applause for his masterful direction of Himanshu Sharma'srich, riotous story. Evoking a new-age Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Rai keeps things tight, light, yet layered." [32] Hailing the film as enjoyable, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express added,"I would buy a ticket for Kangana Ranaut." She gave the film 3 out of 5 stars.[33] Saibal Chatterji of NDTV said," The film hits the ground running, cruises along like a song until its final moments, where it comes close to losing its way just a tad."[34] Mihir Fadnavis of The Firstpost praised Kangana's performance saying "...the real draw of Tanu Weds Manu Returns is that you get two Kangana Ranauts to entertain you and she delivers in a huge way." But he criticized other performances saying "The usually fantastic Deepak Dobriyal is needlessly over the top, while Madhavan doesn't emote much apart from sullenness.[35] Renowned director Hansal Mehta praised Kangana's performance saying " Easily, the best this year. Kangana is bloody brilliant. No words to describe her virtuoso performance. You laugh, you cry and you live her double lives. " Farah Khan hailed the film saying "Usually sequels disappoint, but Aanand L. Rai makes sure this one surpasses the original." Gauri Shinde exclaimed," Kangana rocks! She is fantastic. It is difficult to decide on one character."Anurag Kashyap called the sequel as one "that goes ten up on its predecessor" and also praised the writing.[36]
