McCook was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts and graduated Marlboro High School. He studied video and performance art on Massachusetts College of Art and Design through the SIM program (Studio for Interrelated Media).[2]

McCook started his interest in Drag started shortly after he graduated from Marlboro High School and began attending the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, creating his drag persona, a Russian woman, during his senior year. [3] Katya’s “full name” is Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova, which is a combination of three different Russian gymnasts: Yekaterina Lobaznyuk whose nickname is Katya, Yevgeniya Petrovna Kuznetsova and Elena Zamolodchikova. [4] Zamolodchikova began performing regularly at Boston-area drag shows such as Jacques Cabaret and TraniWreck at the Oberon [1]hosting an experimental drag show called Perestroika for seven years.[5]
