In the first round, the competitors are given one or more metal objects which they must turn into a bladed weapon that meets specific requirements. They're given 10 minutes to create a design, and then usually three hours to produce a finished blade. When the time has elapsed, the judges check to see if the weapons meet the specifications and compare the designs and the quality of workmanship. The panel votes to select one competitor for eliminating. Whenever a contestant is eliminated, he is asked by Willis to "surrender" his weapon. In the second round, the bladesmiths are given an additional three hours. They may improve their blades during that time if they wish, but they must submit a fully functional and finished weapon when the time runs out. The judges perform tests on the three weapons, and then vote to eliminate another contestant. In the third and final round, the two remaining contestants are sent home to create a classic bladed weapon. Viewers are told about the history of the weapon and get to see the bladesmith's forging them in their own workshops. When they return, their weapons are submitted to tests, and then the judges decide who made the best version of the chosen weapon. The winner gets the $10,000 prize and is declared champion.

Forged in Fire is an American reality television competition series, shown on History, and produced by Outpost Entertainment, a Leftfield Entertainment company. In each episode four bladesmiths compete in weapon making challenges, with the winner earning a $10,000 prize and the title of a Forged in Fire Champion. The program is hosted by Will Willis, and features the three judge panel of bladed weapon experts, J. Neilson, David Baker, and Doug Marcaida. The program premiered on Monday, June 22, at 10pm ET.[1] History has ordered eight episodes of the series.[2]

Format

The series is filmed in Brooklyn, New York[2][3][1] on a set called 'The Forge' filled with metalworking machinery.

Cast

The series is hosted by Will Willis, a former Army Ranger and decorated Air Force para-rescue specialist.[2][3] Willis has been seen on TV previously on two shows for the former Military Channel, the series Special Ops Mission and Triggers[1]. The three judge panel consists of J. Neilson, David Baker, and Doug Marcaida. Neilson is knife and sword expert[2] and Mastersmith with more than 20 years experience in making knives and edged weapons.[3][1] Baker is an authority on weapons history[2] and an expert on replicating period-accurate weapons for both museums and films.[3][1] Marcaida is a hand-to-hand combat specialist[2] who has studied and mastered fighting styles and techniques from around the world.[3][1] Tim Healy and Steve Ascher are executive producers for History.[2][3] Jodi Flynn, Brent Montgomery, David George, Shawn Witt and Simon Thomas are executive producers for Outpost Entertainment.[2][3]
