Steve Huffman (born November 12, 1983) is an American web developer and both the co-founder and CEO of the social networking website Reddit.[1][2] More recently, he co-founded the airfare search site Hipmunk.[3][4]

Career

Huffman, a graduate of Wakefield School in The Plains, Virginia, attended the University of Virginia and majored in Computer Science.[5] After college, he teamed up with classmate Alexis Ohanian to start Reddit, which was initially funded by Y Combinator.[5]

Huffman and Ohanian first pitched their idea to Paul Graham from Y-Combinator. He advised and gave his suggestions, changing of what was an app for ordering food, to become Reddit.[6]

Reddit was later acquired by Condé Nast in 2006.[7]

In 2010, Huffman teamed up with Adam Goldstein to create the travel site Hipmunk, with funding also from Y Combinator.[3][4] In 2011, Huffman was named to Inc. magazine's 30 under 30 list.[8] Huffman is also the instructor for "CS253: Web Development", an e-learning course that began on April 2012 offered by online education provider Udacity.[9]

In 2014 Huffman stated that his decision to sell Reddit was a mistake, and that the site's growth had exceeded his expectations.[10]

On July 10, 2015, after Ellen Pao's resignation, Huffman was appointed CEO of Reddit.[2] Huffman expressed that some controversial communities shouldn't be on Reddit, writing "Neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen."[11] Huffman later stated "we didn’t create reddit to be a bastion of free speech, the concept is important to us." Huffman went on to publish a lengthy statement around objectionable content, creating new policies that would require users to opt-in to seeing some content, and blocking material that encourages "Systematic and/or continued actions to torment or demean someone."[12][13][14]
