Welcome to Files for Upload, part of WikiProject Articles for creation. This process was created to allow unregistered users to add new files to Wikipedia with the assistance of experienced Wikipedians. If you would like to upload an image yourself, you can create an account and after four days and 10 edits you will be autoconfirmed and able to upload files. However, please consider uploading free files over at the Wikimedia Commons (instructions for creating an account there can be found here).

Reviewing requests

If you are an experienced editor, then you can help out by reviewing requests. Make sure you're familiar with Wikipedia's policies on non-free content (or simplified version). Learn about Wikipedia's various copyright tags. Read the guide on how to review file upload requests. Note that this page's editnotice contains an expandable cheat sheet with all the templates used in reviewing requests. After uploading the file tag its talk page with {{subst:WPAFCF}}. Remember to subst all templates. Notify the requester at their talk page using {{subst:ffu talk}} ~~~~ whenever you act on their request. You are responsible for anything you upload, so make sure you are comfortable that the file satisfies Wikipedia's policies first. If the file is non-free, then you must insert the file in the appropriate article right away in order to comply with the non-free content criteria.

Article To Be Used On/Reason For Upload: To be used in Vela Supernova Remnant article. My rationale:

1. This image is unique, as no known free image of this supernova remnant exists and there is no expectation a free one will become available in the near future
2. This image is used in a manner to identify the subject in question and does not replace the purpose of the original
3. This image has been scaled down in size to focus on the subject in question
4. This image has been published before outside Wikipedia via DSS
5. This image is used in an encyclopedic manner to identify the subject in question
6. This image complies with the image use policy
7. This image is used in the Vela Supernova Remnant article infobox, and if used in any other articles rationale must be added for each use in each article
8. This image will be used as a mean to identify the subject in question, and its removal would be detrimental to readers' understanding of the article topic
9. This image will only be used in the article space, not in the user space or any other space
10. This image has a description which identifies the author/copyright holder and source, has an appropriate non-free copyright tag and identifies each article this image is used in as well as a rationale for each use

This request has been placed on hold while pending a confirmation of permission. This file already exists on the Italian Wikipedia, however it was a request handled by OTRS so it has been referred to them to confirm trans-wiki use. RegistryKey^(RegEdit) 06:19, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

@RegistryKey: This is a bit complicated, different copyright holders have requested different things:

• "POSS-II, the Second Palomar Observatory Sky Survey" states that "Wikipedia" (no language specified) use is permitted, all commercial use explicitly prohibited in ticket. Permission would be from "California Institute of Technology / Palomar Observatory", and credit should go there as well.
• Anglo-Australian Observatory are happy with CalTech's response.
• For DSS, the situation is less clear, but it seems like Wikipedia only permission with the following acknowledgement: "Use of these images is courtesy of the UK Schmidt Telescope (copyright in which is owned by the Science and Technology Facilities Council of the UK and the Anglo-Australian Telescope Board) and the Digitized Sky Survey created by the Space Telescope Science Institute, operated by AURA, Inc, for NASA, and are reproduced here with permission from the Royal Observatory Edinburgh."
• For SSS, similar to DSS, but acknowledgement should read "Use of these images is courtesy of the UK Schmidt Telescope (copyright in which is owned by the Science and Technology Facilities Council of the UK and the Anglo-Australian Telescope Board) and the Southern Sky Survey as created by the SuperCOSMOS measuring machine and are reproduced here with permission from the Royal Observatory Edinburgh."

Comment: We will need a link to the page you took this file from which proves the file's license, as well as the article you'd like the file used on (is it atan2?). If you created this file entirely yourself, without taking it from somewhere else, consider creating an account (it's free!) and uploading it yourself on the Commons. It makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing the work, to show a primary visual image associated with the work, and to help the user quickly identify the work and know they have found what they are looking for. Use for this purpose does not compete with the purposes of the original artwork, namely the creator providing graphic design services to relevant concerns and video game marketing to the public.
