Mohamed Anwar Hadid (born 1948) is an American real estate developer, known for developing luxury hotels and building mansions, primarily in the Bel Air and Beverly Hills districts of Los Angeles.

Early life

Mohamed Anwar Hadid was born in Nazareth, Mandatory Palestine in 1948,[1] the son of Anwar Hadid (1908/09-1979) and his wife Khairiah.[2]

Anwar Hadid studied at a Jerusalem teachers' college in and attended a university in Syria to study law, before working in land settlement for the British authorities and teaching English at a teachers' college in Mandatory Palestine. In 1948, he moved to Syria and joined the United States Information Agency and the Voice of America. The family lived in Damascus, Tunis and Greece before moving to Washington DC, as Anwar had a job at the VOA headquarters there, when Mohamed was 14, and spent the rest of his career there with VOA and USIA as a writer, editor and translator.[2][3][4]

When his father died in 1979, Mohamed had a brother Mahmud, of Stuart, Florida, he and his brother Majid, were both living in McLean, Virginia, and five sisters, Raida Al-Hassan of Annandale, Maha Matar of Bethesda, and Ghada Harnden, Sana Hadid and Majida Hyatt, all of McLean.[2]

Career

He started his career restoring and reselling classic cars in Georgetown, before moving to Greece where he opened a nightclub on a Greek island, and with the profits, started developing real estate back in the US.[5]

In the 1980s, he bought the Ritz-Carlton hotels in New York and Washington for US$150 million.[3]

He developed Le Belvedere, a mansion in Bel Air, Los Angeles, that sold for $50 million in 2010. In 2012. He developed The Crescent Palace, a 48,000-square-foot home on an acre plot next door to the Beverly Hills Hotel, which he listed for sale at $58 million.[6]

In December 2015, Hadid was facing the possibility of jail, after the Los Angeles city council pursued criminal charges over a house that he is building broke multiple planning orders and was twice the permitted size.[7] The house is located at 901 Strada Vecchia in Bel Air.[8]

Personal life

He is divorced from Yolanda Foster, with whom he has three children including the models Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid.

He has appeared in the TV show, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, as the friend of Lisa Vanderpump.[6]
