https://letterpile.com/books/Scarlet-Witch-Costume-History The Avengers are a super group created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963. It was initially conceived as a super group with the most important characters of Marvel Comics, in a similar style of the Justice League for DC Comics.[1] The initial roster was composed by Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp. The Fantastic Four were not included because they were already a super group, and neither was Spider-Man, because they thought that the character was unsuitable for team work and worked better as a stand-alone character. Hulk was quickly removed from the team as well, for similar reasons.[1] They also reused Captain America, a character that had ceased being published a decade before.[1] Lee and Kirby also created villains for the team such as Baron Zemo, Immortus and Kang the Conqueror.[2]

Kirby left the title after the first year, being replaced by Don Heck, but kept drawing covers for some time.[2] Heck started in issue 9 and introduced the villain Wonder Man, but were sued by DC Comics because the name was too similar to that of Wonder Woman, so the character was not used again.[3] The original team was disbanded and replaced by another one, composed by Captain America, Hawkeye (from the Iron Man comic book), Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch (from the X-Men comic book). This changed the original premise, as those were minor characters without their own comic books. Later additions to the group, such as Black Widow, Hercules and Black Panther, also lacked comic books. Pym and the Wasp were also used again in the time when their comic book was cancelled. The Vision was the first character specifically created as a member of the team.
