Loyola University of Congo (ULC) was founded in 2016 by the Society of Jesus in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Jesuits have pursued educational efforts in Kinshasa since 1954,[1] and have named their first university in the Congo after the founder of Jesuits, St. Ignatius of Loyola.

History

Loyola University of Congo was born of the merger of the Agroveterinary Higher Institute (ISAV) and the Faculty of Philosophy St. Peter Canisius, both located in Kimwenza the urban-rural district of southern suburbs of Kinshasa, inheriting the infrastructures of these institutions.[2] ULC will organize departments of philosophy, agronomic and veterinary sciences, science and technology, social sciences and managements science, and business administration.[1][3][4] ISAV has changed its name to Faculty of Agronomic and Veterinary Science  (FSAV). FSAV does research in agriculture, veterinary, and sustainable development, where sustainability involves anthropological, social, and economic factors.[5][6]

Departmental growth

In July 2017 Ferdinand Muhigirwa, S.J., of the university was a panelist at a roundtable hosted by the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools.[7]

In September 2017 Loyola announced a partnership with the French Institut catholique d'arts et métiers (ICAM) for collaboration in the training of engineers for industry.[8]

In 2017 also, reconciling law and morality in the human rights discourse was the topic of a book by a professor in the philosophy department.[9]

Research projects include the flea beetle[10] breeding crickets,[11] and identifying a bioactive molecule in the closed matrix of wood cells.[12]

Programs

CERED is a program of FSAV which includes researchers, students, and local communities, in pursuit of a Jesuit vision for the world today.[13] It works in conjunction with the Global Ignatian Advocacy Network which focuses on key areas including forests and water. CERED works on the analysis of climate change impact in the Kinshasa area to provide meteorological parameters for farmers and to establish a databank for monitoring climate variations and extreme weather events.[5] CERED uses a multidisciplinary and participatory approach involving students, researchers, and local communities, and covers both theoretical and practical aspects of natural science and the social sciences, with the welfare of people at the core of the research concerns.[14][15]

Inaugurated in February 2016, CERED includes a five-year (2017-2022) research program with a focus on global knowledge of climate change, sustainable management of natural resources, and the impact of human activities in ecosystems. Research began in the Plateau de Batéké where ULC has an agroforestry center.[5]

The 2020 Strategy is a joint initiative among various government ministries and eight tertiary institutions, including ULC. These institutions have been selected to implement this pilot experiment in issuing licenses and master's degrees and furnishing young talent trained to manage the DRC's unique biodiversity.[16]

Food processing is another area where ULC has partnered with the government, in training for the processing of agricultural products and to create jobs, through the government's new agri-food sector.[17]
