Retrofitted skid plate on a Saab 96.
Fake skid plate

A skid plate is an abrasion-resistant material affixed to the underside of a vehicle or boat[1] to prevent damage to the underside when contact is made with the ground.

Skid plates may be used on off-road vehicles and lowered vehicles to prevent damage to the underside. Some vehicles come equipped with the skid plates from the factory, yet such skid plates are installed rather for looks, than for protection[2]. Off-road trucks and rock crawlers usually install skid plates made of 3/16’’ steel, as only strong sheet metal can provide reasonable degree of protection. As a rule, such panels feature bolt-on installation and are installed before the off-road trips. Skid plates can protect such areas as:

  • engine area;
  • transmission area;
  • transfer case; steering box;
  • differentials;
  • exhaust;
  • fuel tank;
  • control arms.

Fake skid plates are also added to vehicles for an off-road look.[3]
