"2GIS" (pronounced "tugis", before the rebranding in 2011 - "DoubleGIS") is an international cartographic company that produces electronic directories with the same name with city maps since 1999.
The main office of "2GIS" is located in Novosibirsk. The company has directories for many cities in Russia, as well as several cities abroad - in Kazakhstan, Italy, the Czech Republic, Chile, the UAE, Kirghizia, Ukraine and Cyprus.
All versions of "2GIS", like updates to them, are free for users. The main source of income of the company "2GIS" - the sale of advertising spots on the map and in the directory (banner, place in the list, additional text).
It is one of the ten largest Internet companies in Russia according to Forbes.
It is one of the top 10 employers of Russia by the version of HeadHunter.
In 2013, the company earned 3 billion rubles.
History of the company
The Appearance of DoubleGIS
The project was born inside the Novosibirsk company "Tehnograd plus". She was engaged in the production of professional GIS commissioned by NGTS and other organizations. In the mass market, "Technograd plus" offered several copies of CDs with a map of Novosibirsk. Also, the company released a CD "Building firms and organizations" - an appendix to the newspaper "Stroyka".
In 1998, after the crisis, many customers of Technograd plus were unable to pay for expensive "not the first necessity". There was a need to find new customers and ways to apply GIS. Moreover, the mass of pirated copies dispersed from the previously released copies of CDs, and it became meaningless to sell them.
It was decided to release a free product that will serve as a demo of professional GIS. Experience with the newspaper "Construction" showed that the electronic directory, combined with a map of the city, may be of interest to advertisers. Alexander Sysoev formulated the concept of a new project: free distribution and payback due to advertising. The product was named DoubleGIS: GeoInformation System plus City Information Guide.
Early years
The first issue of DoubleGIS was released on April 25, 1999. In the spring of 2001 the interface DoubleGIS 2.0 was developed, a little later the site www.2gis.ru was opened and the service of updates appeared.
At first the company tried to cooperate with outside organizations - bought databases, appealed to advertising agencies, invited specialists to create a rubricator. But this practice proved ineffective. The company decided to develop its own services for each of the main business processes. Therefore, in the same year of 2001, the information department and the sales department began to be formed.
In 2002, the DubleGIS application was delivered for the first time free of charge on compact disks to 15,000 offices in Novosibirsk.
Further development
In 2004, the project was singled out as an independent business unit - OOO DoubleGIS. In the same year, the first branch of OOO DoubleGIS was opened in Omsk, and commercial concession agreements were concluded with partners in Tomsk, Barnaul and Novokuznetsk. From that moment, the expansion of DoubleGIS into the cities of Russia began.
In 2006, an online version of the directory and a version for PDA based on Windows Mobile were released. DoubleGIS in Novosibirsk was divided into a management company and a branch for the sale of advertising items.
In 2007, DoubleGIS 3.0 is released, a new version of the program with an interface in the style of MS Office 2007.
In 2010, for the first time, the CodeFest IT conference was held.
In 2011, the company conducts rebranding, as a result of which products are called 2GIS (DGIS). Twelve years after the first release, 2GIS comes to the capital - a Moscow directory has been published. Release of mobile apps for Android and iOS.
In 2012, 2GIS goes to the Italian cities of Venice and Padua. This is the first issue outside the CIS.
In 2013, the next renewal of the corporate style takes place. Foreign expansion continues: 2GIS appears in the Czech Republic and Cyprus. The application for Windows Phone is released. The concept and interface of the new 2GIS was announced.
2014: Several new markets, including Chile.
Brand
Prior to the rebranding of 2011, the company's products were called DoubleGIS. The name reflected the essence of the product: map and directory, that is, the Geoinformation System and the city information guide.
In 2011, the company conducted a rebranding. The corporate style has completely changed, and the product has received the name 2GIS (TwoGIS). One of the goals of the renaming was preparation for the release of the directory in the CIS and far abroad - 2GIS everyone can read the way it is pronounced in his native language, which is easier than pronouncing "DoubleGIS". In addition, the problem of the URL of the site to the company's name was solved.
