Stor-Age was first conceived in 2004 as a solution to the lack of self storage facilities available in the greater metropolitan areas of South Africa. Current CEO Gavin Lucas, erstwhile receiving his articles as a CA(SA) at the University of Cape Town, began working with his father, Les Lucas, to build a real estate investment trust alongside his brother, Stephen Lucas, and fellow accountant Steven Horton. The four set up a "hotel pool rental scheme", raising R10 million by selling 200 units valued at R50,000 each. By 2007, they had undertaken extensive market research and secured a site in Edgemead, Cape Town.. A detailed strategy with a minute level of detail saw Stor-Age target 40 properties with a R2 billion portfolio value by 2015. By 2013 they had 33 properties, 17 trading stores, eight greenfield sites and eight acquisitions. |
