==Early life==
Garda Donegan was a native of [[County Longford]]. He was killed by a [[Provisional IRA]] [[booby-trap]] [[bomb]] left by the roadside, at either Legakelly or Drumboghanagh, near [[Newtownbutler]] in [[County Fermanagh]]. Garda Donegan had crossed the border into [[Northern Ireland]] moments before his death.

Donegan joined the Garda Siochana on 4 September 1934, being issued with the Service No.8586. He received a promotion to the rank of Sergeant in 1952. On 8 June 1972 Donegan was leading joint forces team of Garda and [[Irish Defence Force]] in a patrol along the [[Eire]]-[[Northern Ireland|Ulster]] border between [[County Cavan]] and [[County Fermanagh]]. He had crossed into the border into [[Northern Ireland|Ulster]] in a country lane at [[Drumboghanagh]] when he was struck and killed by the blast of a [[Provisional IRA]] [[booby-trap]] [[bomb]] left on the roadside by the [[Provisional Irish Republican Army]] for the British security forces.

Early life

Samuel Donegan was a native of Ballintampen, County Longford in Eire.

Police career

Donegan joined the Garda Siochana on 4 September 1934, being issued with the Service No.8586. He received a promotion to the rank of Sergeant in 1952.
