In 1864, the Calcutta Municipality planned to start a market & built a panoramic building in 'Sealdah'. Considering the urgent need for a hospital, 'Sealdah Municipal Hospital' was inaugurated instead of market in Sealdah, which has similarity to the European architecture. British Government was compelled to open a hospital in 1864 due to the different social & political pressure such as great epidemic, class struggle, Sepoy Mutiny etc. The vernacular class was transferred from the medical college to 'Sealdah Municipal Hospital' in 1873, it was named as 'Sealdah Medical School'.

It became a prime medical school in India in mother tongue. In 1874, this native medical school was named as 'Campbell Medical School'. On 10 August 1950, 'Campbell Medical School' was once more renamed as 'Nilratan Sircar Medical College & Hospital'.

In spite of so many disregard, deception & disappointment from the moment of birth and it's growing up, it presented various greatest children to the medical science.

  1. In 1912, Dr. Kedarnath Das innovated "Bengal Forceps" which maintains similar size to the pelvic curve of Asian & Bengali lady and the size of the head of baby. It will stand forever as a monument of excellence.
  2. In 1922, Dr. Upendranath Brahmachari discovered 'Urea Stibamine' for the treatment of 'Kala-azar' which was considered as a landmark of antibiotics. In this native medical school, antibiotics was discovered before long years ago of discovery of 'Penicillin'.
  3. 'Cholera Toxin' was discovered by Dr. Sambhu Nath De in 'Nilratan Sircar Medical College & Hospital' which was a milestone in the application of science in medical treatment.
  4. '1st Test tube baby' by Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay (physician)
