Tetraodon abei is an aggressive and territorial freshwater pufferfish from the Mekong river basin. They are molluscivores, using the beak-like teeth to break open the shell of the prey. Maximum length is 10 cm. It has been speculated that this fish belongs to an unofficial group of freshwater pufferfish called target puffers or Tetraodon leiurus group. The systematics of this group are subject to scientific controversy and will remain so until adequate fundings for a revision can be found. Other pufferfish associated with the Target Group are:Tetraodon leiurus, Tetraodon cochinchinensis, Tetraodon turgidus, Tetraodon hilgendorfii, Tetraodon cambodgiensis.
