During the early afternoon of 3 October 2019, a man stabbed five police employees at the Prefecture of Police on the Île de la Cité in central Paris, killing four of them.[3][4] Police shot the attacker dead.[5][4] The attack came a day after police went on strike across France over increasing violence towards officers. [6]

Those killed were three male police officers and one female member of the support staff.[7] The fifth victim, also a woman, was critically wounded and was evacuated to a nearby hospital by helicopter.[7][4] BFM TV reported that the attacker stabbed two people inside their offices, one person on a stairway and the fourth person inside the building's courtyard.[8] Following the incident, the police headquarters building was visited by President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.[7] The Île de la Cité was placed under a lockdown and the Cité station of the Paris Métro, located on the island, was closed to passengers.[5]

Attacker

The attacker was reported as being 45-year-old Mickaël Harpon, an IT specialist who did administrative work at the station for 16 years.[4][5] He was born in Fort-de-France in the Caribbean overseas department of Martinique in 1974,[7] and had converted to Islam 18 months prior[9][10][11][12]and had been deaf since childhood.[13] The murder weapon was a ceramic knife of a type undetectable by metal scanners.[14]

Investigation

Initially, a police union suggested a workplace dispute was to blame. However, on 4 October counter-terrorism investigators took over the investigation.[15]
