Franklin Boukaka (October 10, 1940 - about February 22, 1972) was a Congolese tenor singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He played in bands based in both countries named Congo, toured worldwide and achieved broad popularity, took outspoken political stances, was widely suspected to have been the victim of an extrajudicial execution following a coup attempt in the Republic of the Congo, and is recognized as a pioneer of Congolese popular music.

Originally named Aubin François Boukaka [discogs]

He was known for his leftist political views, including anti-colonialism and African unity, in particular uniting the two Congos.

His wife was Antoinette Mouanga. [l'insoumis article] and that was the name of one of his songs, written after her death. http://www.adiac-congo.com/content/les-immortelles-chansons-dafrique-mwanga-de-franklin-boukaka-113117 [Mwanga]

On which Don Fadel of Likembe played.[1] His son Malcom Boukaka [spelling?] was named after Malcolm X.[2]

Was a pioneer of Congolese rumba and soukous.

"Le Bucheron" is widely known, widely played today.

On February 22, 1972, a leftist group attempted a coup against the Republic of Congo government . Boukaka died that day. Congolese music historian Gary Stewart reports that "many Congolese suspect he was executed - all the more so because his name had originally turned up on a list of those who had been arrested." [Stewart, p.186] Often said to have been killed on the night of 23-24 February, eg at http://www.adiac-congo.com/content/les-immortelles-chansons-dafrique-mwanga-de-franklin-boukaka-113117 and http://www.congopage.com/?page=imprimersans&id_article=6634 In 2016, the French publisher La Doxa Éditions published in his memory “Franklin, l’insoumis: d'après une idée de Marien Fauney Ngombé” (Franklin, the rebellious: based on an idea by Marien Fauney Ngombé). It is a book of 14 short stories, by 14 authors including Ndèye Fatou Kane, each inspired by a song by Boukaka.[3]
