Summary

MWEB was founded in 1997 and is today South Africa's leading Internet Service Provider(ISP).MWEB is highly regarded for its wide range of internet access offerings, differentiated tools and services, best-of-breed technology and internationally sourced R&D to benefit its approximate 320 000 subscribers. The company comprises two main divisions: MWEB Connect, which is focused on the Residential and Small business market, and MWEB Business, which offers products and services for medium and large businesses to integrate their IT infrastructure and business processes with the Internet.

In March 2010, MWEB created a stir in the South African Internet Industry with its launch of South Africa's cheapest uncapped ADSL connection at the time.[1] Other major ISPs in the industry soon followed suit under the immense pressure created by MWEB who essentially fascilitated a shift in the South African Internet Industry bringing it more inline with international markets in terms of pricing and product offering. [2]

In June 2008 Naspers announced that MWEB would be auctioned off. The reason given was the MWEB would be concentrating on developing its wireless broadband network while Naspers's core business was as a content provider. In November 2008, the company announced that the auction had been canceled due to the global contraction in credit markets."Telkom buys MWEB Africa". 10 November 2008. Retrieved 25 November 2009.[3]

MWEB.co.za - the company's online portal is ranked in the top 100 South African sites on Alexa Internet[4]

Earlier in 2009 MWEB decided to focus on mobile internet and aggressively started development and design on its mobi site MWEB.mobi.[5]
