Michael Joseph Byrne (13 May 1941 – 24 December 2020) MB, FRACP was a professor of medical oncology in Western Australia.

Michael Byrne, third child of Dora (née Ivey) and dentist turned publican Michael Byrne, was born in the Beaconsfield Hotel, educated at Mary's Mount primary school in Gooseberry Hill and St. Louis in Claremont, and graduated in Medicine from the University of Western Australia in 1966. He completed his medical training at the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston, returning to Perth in 1974 to establish and head Australia's first Department of Medical Oncology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Byrne was an active researcher in Breast Cancer[1] and Mesothelioma[2], lectured at the School of Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Western Australia, and held numerous board positions, including the with the Australian National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases, and the ethics committee at St. John of God Hospital.

Byrne was an international all-breeds dog judge and, with his wife Georgina, established the Burnbrook German Shorthaired Pointer kennel and bloodline.
