Sean Turnell is an Australian economist and former economic policy advisor to the Myanmar government.[1][2] He was also a professor of economics at Macquarie University, former senior analyst at the Bank of Australia and the director of research at the Myanmar Development Institute.[3][4]
In 2009, the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies published his book on the history of the financial sector in Myanmar, "Fiery Dragon".[5]
On 6 February, in the aftermath of the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, he was detained, becoming the first known foreign national to be arrested in relation to the coup.[6]
