Nguyễn Thị Huyên (chữ Hán: 阮氏晅, 1441 - 1505) was a queen consort of Later Lê dynasty. She was the wife of emperor Lê Thánh Tông and mother of emperor Lê Hiến Tông.[1]
Biography
Empress Nguyễn Thị Huyên was born in 1441 at Gia Miêu outer village, Tống Sơn district, Hà Trung local government, Thanh Hoa town. She was the daughter of the Duke Nguyễn Công Lộ and foster daughter of the officer Nguyễn Đức Trung. She has entered Lê dynasty's palace on July 1460 with rank Sung-nghi (充儀), lived at the palace of Vĩnh Ninh.
Lê Thánh Tông was afflicted with a sexually transmitted venereal disease from having sex with his concubines and may have contracted the disease from a Cham girl taken prisoner in the 1471 invasion of Champa, since the Vietnamese girls who became his concubines were selected for their virginity, health and beauty but the beautiful Cham girls taken as slaves and concubines may have had venereal disease. His empress Nguyễn Thị Hằng rubbed poison into the sores of his diseased skin and he died.[2][3][4] The art historian Trần Quang Đức has suggested the wording of the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư on Lê Thánh Tông's death implies that empress Nguyễn Thị Hằng put the poison on her hands while performing a handjob on Lê Thánh Tông's penis, in revenge for Lê Thánh Tông spending most of his time having sex with his numerous concubines and palace maids while he had her isolated in a separate palace before his illness.[5]
