Recovery from Reg Varney's Off-Air Recordings

I read that that the master videotapes of Down the 'Gate were wiped by the company that made the series. It only survives today, because Reg Varney recorded it off-air on a N1500 format home videorecorder. That's an interesting story, so shouldn't it be on Wikipedia? Anyone have confirmation it is true?
