[[File:Information icon4.svg|link=|25px|alt=Information icon]] There is currently a discussion at [[Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents]] regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. == Wikipedia and copyright ==

[[File:Control copyright icon.svg|30px|link=|alt=Control copyright icon]] Hello Fryboy Editor! Your additions to [[:Big 5 Sporting Goods]] have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the [[public domain]] or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a [[WP:COMPLIC|suitably-free and compatible]] copyright license. (''To request such a release, see [[Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission]]''.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid [[copyright]] and [[plagiarism]] issues.

*You can only copy/translate a ''small'' amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double [[quotation mark]]s (") and cite the source using an [[WP:IC|inline citation]]. You can read about this at [[Wikipedia:Non-free content]] in the sections on "text". See also [[Help:Referencing for beginners]], for how to cite sources here.
*Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information ''in your own words and structure'', in proper [[paraphrase]]. Following the source's words too closely can create [[derivative work|copyright problems]], so it is not permitted here; see [[Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing]]. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to [[Wikipedia:Verifiability|verify]] the information and to demonstrate that the content is not [[Wikipedia:No original research|original research]].
*We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. [[Fair use]] images must meet all ten of the [[WP:NFCC|non-free content criteria]] in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
*If ''you'' own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you ''may'' be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, ''to the world'', into either the [[public domain]] (PD) or under a [[Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright#Can I add something to Wikipedia that I got from somewhere else?|suitably-free and compatible]] copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See [[Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials]].
*Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at [[Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia]]. See also [[Help:Translation#License requirements]].

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be [[Wikipedia:Blocking policy|blocked]] from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. <!-- Template:uw-copyright-new --> <span style="border-radius:9em;padding:0 5px;background:#3366cc">[[User:rsjaffe|<b style="color:white">rsjaffe</b>]]&nbsp;[[User talk:rsjaffe|<b style="color:white">🗩</b>]]&nbsp;[[Special:Contribs/rsjaffe|<b style="color:white">🖉</b>]]</span> 03:58, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

{{unblock reviewed |1=I am just trying to give articles a good history and everybody attacks me and it really just ticks me off. Do I write it in my own words? You never told me how I should update the history. This block is quite unfair. Wikipedia is my life and you guys trying to take it away breaks my heart. And IM NOT AUTOBLOCKED! |decline = In order to lift the block, we need to be certain that you understand how copyright works on Wikipedia. To allow the reviewing administrator to assess your understanding, please respond to the following questions in your next unblock appeal, explaining in your own words:
*What is copyright?
*How is Wikipedia licenced?
*Why is copyrighted content not allowed on Wikipedia?
*Under what circumstances ''can'' we use copyrighted content?
*How do you intend to avoid violating the copyright policy in the future?
Your answers will enable us to establish whether or not you should be unblocked. [[User:Yamla|Yamla]] ([[User talk:Yamla|talk]]) 10:49, 30 January 2022 (UTC)}}

You have received [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Fryboy_Editor&diff=1062516384&oldid=1060954411 1] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Fryboy_Editor&diff=1062522971&oldid=1062522821 2] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Fryboy_Editor&diff=1063284803&oldid=1062522971 3] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Fryboy_Editor&diff=1064361467&oldid=1064337255 4] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Fryboy_Editor&diff=1064931281&oldid=1064689326 5] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Fryboy_Editor&diff=1065424693&oldid=1065155503 6] warnings for copyright violations, with the sixth one being labeled a final warning. The above section regarding [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Big_5_Sporting_Goods&diff=1067591313&oldid=1067579962 this edit] to [[Big 5 Sporting Goods]], where you added four paragraphs copied from https://www.big5sportinggoods.com/store/company/History, shows to me that you still do not have adequate understanding of copyright. Because of this, I am blocking you- I have no personal issue with you, it's just that my duty as an admin is to protect the encyclopedia from harmful edits. Yes, you need to write all content in your own words- you cannot copy from other websites, and if you copy between Wikipedia pages, you must make of note of it in the edit summary. If you want to be unblocked, you must commit to not copying from sources and commit to attributing when copying content between articles. [[File:Information.svg|25px|alt=Information icon]] Hello and [[Help:Introduction|welcome to Wikipedia]]. When you add content to [[Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines|talk pages]] and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to [[Wikipedia:Signatures|sign your posts]]. There are two ways to do this. Either:
# Add four [[tilde]]s ( &#126;&#126;&#126;&#126; ) at the end of your comment, or
# With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button [[File:OOjs UI icon signature-ltr.svg|22px|link=Wikipedia:How to sign your posts]] located above the edit window.
This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you.<!-- Template:uw-tilde --> <span style="border-radius:9em;padding:0 5px;background:#3366cc">[[User:rsjaffe|<b style="color:white">rsjaffe</b>]]&nbsp;[[User talk:rsjaffe|<b style="color:white">🗩</b>]]&nbsp;[[Special:Contribs/rsjaffe|<b style="color:white">🖉</b>]]</span> 04:35, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

[[User:Fryboy Editor|Fryboy Editor]] I promise I won't copyright anymore but how can I commit to attribute when I'm blocked? If you want you can unblock me right now and I'll just stick to updated or fixing infoboxes if that makes you happy.

{{tq|I promise I won't copyright anymore}}... You'll have to be more specific in how you understand what you did is wrong and what you will differently going forward. When it comes to attributing content from another wikipedia article, add a note that reads like <code>copied content from <nowiki>[[page name]]</nowiki>; see that page's history for attribution</code> in the edit summary when copying something over. [[User:Moneytrees|Moneytrees🏝️]][[User talk:Moneytrees|Talk]]/[[User:Moneytrees/CCI guide|CCI guide]] 05:03, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

[[User:Fryboy Editor|Fryboy Editor]] I know what I did is wrong, and I won't do that anymore. I just like to edit/upgrade infoboxes. I won't copy stuff without a valid reason. I won't violate copyright anymore.

For reference:

*You can almost '''never''' copy from anywhere online. This also applies to very slightly rewording what a source says (see the [[WP:PARAPHRASE|close paraphrasing]] guideline). This also applies to images. However, you '''must''' source your information using a citation (see [[WP:REFBEGIN|referencing for beginners]] for help on that front).
*The one main exception to this is copying from other Wikipedia articles, where you '''must''' attribute which article you copied the text from, usually in the edit summary or on the talk page using the <nowiki>{{Copied}}</nowiki> template.

By saying you will not violate copyrights, this is what you are agreeing to follow; this is what all Wikipedia editors must follow. If you need any help, you can send me a message on [[User talk:Skarmory|my talk page]]. Sorry if this comes across harshly – it's somewhat meant to, but I also do want to help you as much as I can. <span style="background-color: black">[[User:Skarmory|<span style="color: yellow">Skarmory</span>]] [[User talk:Skarmory|<span style="color: yellow">(talk •</span>]] [[Special:Contributions/Skarmory|<span style="color: yellow">contribs)</span>]]</span> 06:23, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

[[User:Fryboy Editor|Fryboy Editor]] Yes, I agree I will follow all of the rules. I just want to be unblocked. Is that too much too ask? I feel like I've stated my reasoning. I'll just stick to editing infoboxes.
:I would like to see you unblocked, I really would. But I'm still not sure if you know what you did wrong. It sounds like you're saying something to get out of this situation that you're still not sure you got into, if that makes sense. You'll need to be clearer about what you did wrong. [[User:Moneytrees|Moneytrees🏝️]][[User talk:Moneytrees|Talk]]/[[User:Moneytrees/CCI guide|CCI guide]] 06:59, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

[[User:Fryboy Editor|Fryboy Editor]] I know what I did was wrong, and I know not to ever violate copyright and copy text without explaining why.

[[User:Fryboy Editor|Fryboy Editor]] Fine. If you won't unblock me than I quit. Screw you all. I hate my life.

[[User:Dollarseven|Dollarseven]] Why am I blocked!? This is another new account entirely? <!--Template:Undated--><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|undated]] comment added 15:46, 30 January 2022 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Sorry, I fell asleep. Your unblock request got declined in the meantime; but this might be helpful, since you now have a specific series of questions that you can answer in a new unblock request. Answering them successfully will help get you unblocked. However, creating a new account in a possible attempt to get around your block, as you appear to have done with {{U|Dollarseven}} above, will make appealing your block much, much harder. I recommend you stop using that account immediately, as it is obviously you and is just hurting your chances as getting unblocked.
