As I recall the riots had nothing to do with Mohajir/ Pathan. Karachi’s first curfew resulting from the riots resulted. Never had Karachi seen such violence which resulted in vast destruction in the city.
The traffic system in play was to blame and though traffic was hazardous and deaths probably did result which were not witnessed by masses. This death of Bushra Zaidi while she was going to College was at a main crossing and witnessed by many. This sparked an attack on the bus driver (who happened to be Pathan) and the girl was a Karachi resident.
No political motivation was there but it was the death of an innocent girl and Karachi was shocked to see a death. That was the Karachi we all knew. The spark got out of control and days went by and army called in and curfew placed.
If you recall April of 1985 when I was 14, you can imagine the violence Karachi has after that and daily killings seem to be the norm.
In remembrance of Bushra Zaidi, all that the city lost, let us all contribute to try to bring it back to the peaceful city it was.

Bushra Zaidi (Urdu: بشریٰ زیدی) was a 20-year-old girl whose death in a traffic accident on April 15, 1985 started riots in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.[1] Bushra, a 20-year-old Muhajir student of Sir Syed College, died after being struck by a bus driver of afghan origin. It was thought at that time was Pashtun.[1] This accident started an ethnic conflict between Muhajir and Pashtuns that has lasted over 3 decades.[2]

Viqar Sarwar Khan March 5, 2022
