René Descartes

René Descartes was a French philosopher, scientists, and mathematician. His famous quote was "Cogito ergo sum"and was called the father of Modern philosophy. His famous work was Meditations on First Philosophy which included six meditations that Descartes wrote. The titles of these meditations are: Meditation I. Of the things which may be brought within the sphere of the doubtful. Meditation II. Of the nature of the human mind; and that it is more easily known than the body. Meditation III. Of God: that he Exists. Meditation IV. Of the true and the false. Meditation V. Of the essence of material things, and again, of God, that He exists. Meditation VI. Of the existence of material things, and of the real distinction between the soul and body of man.

He kept finding out and proving what he was, why he existed by referring to the omnipotent God, and questioning whether God, or some evil genius deceived him, made he believed he was something, but actually nothing. Eventually, Descartes associated his existence with thoughts and modes of thoughts (doubting, affirming, etc.) and finally made the decision of "as long as he is a thinking thing, he exists". In this case, even God cannot control his mind.
