Jonathan Handel is an American entertainment lawyer, journalist and author.

He practices entertainment and technology law at TroyGould.[1]and independently[2]and has served as outside Special Counsel to SAG-AFTRA.[3] Previously, he was a journalist at The Hollywood Reporter, and has also written for the Los Angeles Times and Variety.[4][5][6]

Additionally, he has authored five books and is an adjunct professor at Southwestern Law School[7] and lecturer in law at USC Law School[8]. He is also an executive at entertainment tech startup WIO LLC.[9][10]

Education and Career

Handel graduated from Harvard College in 1982, and Harvard Law School in 1990.[11][12]

He began his law career clerking for Judge Irving Goldberg on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in Dallas, TX.[13]

In 1991, he was selected to serve as a federal associate independent counsel to investigate alleged White House political misconduct related to the search of then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton's passport files.[14][15][16][17]

In the months prior to the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, Handel began publishing a series of blogs on the Huffington Post, leading to him becoming recognized as an expert regarding Hollywood unions.[15][18][19][20]

His blogging and media appearances[21] during the strike also led to a part-time, long-term job offer from The Hollywood Reporter.[22][23][24] From 2010 to 2020, Handel was a journalist at The Hollywood Reporter.[25]

In 2020, he was appointed as outside Special Counsel to SAG-AFTRA.[3]

Residuals

Handel has written the only book[26] on specialized entertainment royalties called Residuals and was described by Prof. Catherine Fisk[27] as a residuals expert [Catherine L. Fisk, The Writer's Share, 50 Suffolk U. L. Rev. 621, 623 (2017)].[28] He has written and appeared in the media regarding residuals,[29] including in usage examples for "residuals" in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.[30] He is chief strategy and legal officer at WIO LLC, a startup offering a software service focusing on residuals, called WIOpro.[31]

Handel is the son of late sociologist Gerald S. Handel.
