The Contractor is a 2022 American action film by director Tarik Saleh (in his English-language film debut) starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Gillian Jacobs, Eddie Marsan, J. D. Pardo, Florian Munteanu, and Kiefer Sutherland.[3] The film follows ex-sergeant James Harper's foray into the dark world of mercinary soldiers.

Filming began in Europe including Fort Bragg on October 2019 and wrapped in the filming at the end of 2019. It was released to theaters and on-demand in the United States on April 1, 2022, by Paramount Pictures and STXfilms. It received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $1.3 million worldwide.

Premise

James Harper (Pine), who is involuntarily discharged from the United States Army Special Forces, joins a [Private military company] alongside his best friend (Foster) and under the command of a fellow veteran (Sutherland) in order to support his family.

The project was announced in May 2019 with Chris Pine set to star.[5][6][7]

In October, Ben Foster and Gillian Jacobs were cast as well. The filming started in October 2019 in the United States, and will be filmed in Europe later in the year. The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road Films with Esther Hornstein co-producing. Executive producers includes 30WEST's Dan Friedkin, Micah Green and Dan Steinman, along with Pine, Jonathan Fuhrman, Tom Lassally and Josh Bratman.[8] In November 2019, filming in Romania started for around 8 weeks.[9] In December 2019, Eddie Marsan, Nina Hoss, Amira Casar, Fares Fares and J. D. Pardo has joined the film. The filming wrapped by the end of 2019.[10]

On November 10, 2021, it was reported that the title of the movie has been changed from Violence of Action to The Contractor.

Alex Belcher has composed the film score. Sony Classical has released the soundtrack.

Release

In February 2021, STXfilms acquired distribution rights to the film.[11] The movie was originally scheduled for release on December 10, 2021, but the release was delayed to March 18, 2022,[12] and then to April 1, 2022.[13] In February 2022, it was announced Paramount Pictures and Showtime acquired distribution rights to the film. Paramount will release the film in a simultaneous limited theatrical and premium video-on demand release, with the film coming to Paramount+ and Showtime later in the year.[14] The rights for the film were put in bankruptcy on March 22, 2022 with Migration, LLC now owning all worldwide rights to the film excluding United States.

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, The Contractor was released alongside Morbius, and is projected to gross less than $1 million in its opening weekend.[15] It grossed over $535,000 in the 489 theaters on 3 days in its first opening weekend with rank over 12.[2]

Outside in United States, the film's largest markets are United Arab Emirates ($249,117), South Africa ($67,874), Portugal ($23,123), Russia ($462,028), and Lithuania ($6,532).[2]

Critical response

The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 43% based on 53 reviews, with an average rating of 5.5/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "The Contractor is caught between message movie and standard-issue action thriller, satisfying neither aim despite strong work from a talented cast."[16] Metacritic assigned the film a weighted average score of 51 out of 100 based on 15 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[17]
