Highway Nights is a 2022 Indian drama short film directed by Shubham S Singh. It is a story of an overworked truck driver who gives lift to a young, chatty sex worker in the middle of the night and how they form an unlikely bond. Highway Nights, which features Indian National Award winning director Prakash Jha as the main lead in the film, has won the grand jury prize at the ShortsTV, Best of India Short Film Festival.[1]
Highway Nights also won the best short film Dadasaheb Phalke Award. While it is awaiting its theatrical release in the United States, it is also under consideration for the 2023 Oscars Awards conducted by The Academy Awards.[2][3]
Plot
With a crippling need to earn a living in a laborious world, an old truck driver (Sitaram) and a young sex worker (Manju) form an unusual bond as the sun goes down. The plot is fictitious but it is is inspired and based on director's research on sex workers operating on Indian highways at night.These highways are home to pimps, armed dacoits and drunk drivers.[4]
