John Gouldstone (1764–unknown) was an Essex cricketer of the late 18th century. Few details of him have been found in extant records. He was from Ingatestone and was a member of Hornchurch Cricket Club which was the leading Essex club at the time. His name has been spelled in various ways on scorecards (e.g., Goulston, Gouldston) and he is believed to have sometimes used the pseudonym of "Goldswain".
A player called Goldswain was listed in the Berkshire team for a match against Essex in June 1785 but there is no certainty that it was the same man.[1] If not, the earliest known appearance by Gouldstone was for Essex in a match against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in July 1789.[2] Gouldstone made twelve appearances in senior matches until August 1793 (thirteen if he was also Goldswain). Apart from his last match when he was in Richard Leigh's XI, he always played for either Essex or Hornchurch.[3]
