On 14 Decemer December 2023, two trains in Beijing, China collided in heavy snow, causing 515 hospitalisations. The tracks became slippery, which caused a train to automatically break. A following train was unable to stop in time, which caused the two trains to collide.[1]
Background
There was heavy snow the day before the collision, which caused the temporary closure of some train lines and schools.[1] On the day of the accident, Beijing set an orange alert for heavy snow and a yellow alert for icy roads.[2] The line that the accident happened on transports approximately 400,000 people each weekday.[2]
Accident
The collision occured at about 7pm, in Changping line in Beijing, during rush hour.[2] Due to snow fall, the tracks became slippery, which caused a signal and emergency breaking malfunction, which caused a train to emergency stop.[1][2] A train behind was unable to stop in time, which caused it to collide with the first train.[1] A statement by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport said that "The latter train was in a downhill section, and the snowy weather caused it to slide and failed to brake effectively, causing a rear-end collision with the one in front". A passenger said that "The subway train I took broke into two parts!".[2][infringing link?] This brought 515 people to hospital, 102 of whom suffered broken bones.[1][2] By 6am the next day, 423 had left hospital.[2]
