Penumbra: Overture is the title of a series of episodic games for the PC developed by Swedish[2] developer Frictional Games.
Story
Penumbra: Overture follows Philip, a boy whose last living relative, his mother, dies. After receiving a mysterious letter from his supposedly dead father, Philip traces a series of clues to an abandoned complex in Greenland.
Gameplay
Although Frictional Games describes Penumbra: Overture as a first-person adventure[3], the game blends the genres of survival horror, first-person shooter, and adventure. The use of Newton Game Dynamics emphasizes physics-based puzzles similar to those in Half-Life 2 as well as physics-based combat. The game uses advanced AI, so that if you throw a physics object, such as a traffic cone in a direction, it goes to investigate the noise and you can sneak past.
Release
The first episode of Overture is slated to be released on March 30, 2007 in the United Kingdom. The released in the United States is presumed to be close. The developers have confirmed that the game will be digitally distributed as well (with Steam being seen as a likely possibility).
Tech demo
Penumbra: Overture is based on Frictional Games' earlier game Penumbra, a short tech demo meant to demonstrate the capabilities of their HPL Engine. While not initially intended to be expanded, Penumbra was received exceedingly well, so much so that Frictional decided to develop it into a full-length game.[3]
Ports
On March 22, 2007 a demo version for Linux was released on the Frictional Games forums [1]. A MacOS Port has also been promised, currently only for the PPC architecture [2].
