Emily Brown (born December 30, 1998) is an American ice hockey defender for PWHL Boston of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL).[1] Brown played college ice hockey for the University of Minnesota, serving as co-captain for two seasons and captain for one season.[1]
Early life
Emily Brown is one of four children of Deb and Brian Brown: her hometown is Blaine, Minnesota, and she attended high school at Blaine High School.[2] She was a varsity ice hockey, soccer, and track and field athlete at Blaine High School for all four years, and served as captain for each sport prior to her graduation.[2] She received the Herb Brooks Award in 2017, honoring her as the "most qualified player" at that year's Minnesta Girls' AA state ice hockey tournament.[3]
College career
Brown played varsity ice hockey for five seasons at the University of Minnesota: she played in every single game of her first four seasons, and finished among the university's leaders in career games played (2nd, with 167), career points by a defender (9th, with 89), and career goals by a defender (10th, with 20).[2] She was named to the season-ending All-WCHA teams on four occasions, as a defender on the All-WCHA Second Team for 2018-2019, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021, and a defender on the All-WCHA Third Team for 2021-2022.[2] Brown's achievements as a student were equally praised: she was named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, a member of the WCHA All-Academic Team, and a an Academic All-Big Ten honoree for each of her final four years at the University of Minnesota.[2]
Professional career
Following her graduation, Brown initially joined the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA), playing in 20 games for Team Sonnet in the PWHPA's 2022-2023 season.[1][4][5] At the creation of the Professional Women's Hockey League in 2023, Brown was drafted 46th in the inaugural PWHL Draft by PWHL Boston, and was signed to a one-year contract by Boston that November.[5]
International career
Brown was a member of the U.S. Women's U-18 ice hockey team in 2015 and 2016, winning the gold medal in the 2016 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship tournament.[6] She also skated for the United States U-22 team in the 2019 series against Canada, and for the United States national team in the 2022-2023 Rivalry Series.[6]
