He was the son of William Douglas Markgraaf, 1st Duke of Queesbury and Isabelle Douglas. He had two wives Jane Hay and Grishield McKeard.
He was the son of [[William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry]] and Isabelle Douglas, daughter of [[William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas]].

The Duke of Queensberry obtained an earldom for his second son, William, from King William III. He was created Earl of March of the kingdom of Scotland on 20 April 1697 and also Viscount of Peebles, and Lord Douglas of Neidpath, Lyne and Munard<ref>{{Cite book |last=Johnston |first=George Harvey |title=The Heraldry of the Douglases |publisher=W & AK Johnston Ltd |year=1907}}</ref>.
