His work takes inspiration from pop culture, cartoons, anime, and vinyl toys. When it comes down to Kaw's approach with his characters, they take inspiration from old cartoon characters while still making them his own.


Graffiti is a form of art that has played a big factor in Kaw's artwork. In an interview, Kaws explained how he views graffiti as a “grateful dead community." The way he views graffiti is a form that has been passed around in a very organic way (before the internet), where the community did so well at communicating with each other. Within the graffiti community, he expressed how he feels included and how he belongs. When he talked to people from outside it, they seemed clueless or uninterested in graffiti, which was his passion for design and art.
