On 22 May 2024, a stage in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, collapsed during a campaign rally for mayoral candidate Lorenia Canavati of the Citizens' Movement, killing at least nine people[1] and injuring at least 121 others.

Background

The disaster occurred during a closing campaign rally for Lorenia Canavati, who was running for mayor of San Pedro Garza García as a candidate of the Citizens' Movement.[2] According to Citizen's Movement presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who also attended the event, civil defense teams ensured the makeshift stage used during the event was secure.[3]

Prior to the collapse, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) had issued warnings for heavy rainfall, strong winds and tornadoes across northern Mexico, including Nuevo León.[2]

Accident

On 22 May 2024, hundreds of people gathered at a makeshift stage erected on a baseball field for the center-left political party Citizens' Movement.[4] According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the collapse was caused by strong winds.[1] Footage of the disaster showed Álvarez Máynez, who attended the rally, waving at crowds before looking up to see a giant screen and metal structure toppling toward him, which led him to escape by running toward the back of the stage.[5]

Victims

At least nine people were killed and 121 others were injured, according to Nuevo León governor Samuel García.[6][5] One of the fatalities was a child, while members of the Citizens' Movement campaign team were among those injured.[7]

Aftermath

Máynez and Morena presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum cancelled political events for the following day.[4]

Responses

Domestic

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador offered his condolences to "family members, friends of the victims and political supporters".[5] Claudia Sheinbaum stated she hoped "everything is well with the candidates and attendees" at the event.[8] She also cancelled a sortie in neighboring Monterrey scheduled the next day in solidarity with the victims. Fuerza y Corazón por México candidate Xóchitl Gálvez also expressed her condolences.[5]

Álvarez Máynez suspended his upcoming campaign events and visited the injured people in hospitals.[5]
