Biography

Neither medicine nor art was alien to Dr. D. Bhattacharya even as a child. His father was a doctor, maternal grandfather Dr. Bano Behari Mukherjee was a civil surgeon and recognized as a social-reformer, satirist- writer and a cartoonist and his younger brother Binode Behari Mukherjee was a legendary artist of Santiniketan, Viswabharati University, WB, India. In his formative phase, Binode Behari Mukherjee played the role of mentor by integrating his ways of seeing and thinking. There was a long discourse of letters which was published in a book. in his school days he learned the skill of water colour and gouache painting from artist Sailen Mita one of the founder member of Contemporary artists society, West Bengal (Lalitkala affiliated).

In college days renowned sculptor Sarbari Roy Choudhury admitted him at the "Sketch Club" of AFA, Kolkata for live studies.
Subsequently he learned etching and graphic art from acclaimed graphic painter Sri. Haren Das.

Early life and Education

Debasis Bhattacharya was the youngest child Bano Bihari Bhattacharya, who qualified as a doctor and was a Major in the British Army. His mother was Usha was daughter of Bano Behari Mukherjee, who was recognized as a social- reformer, writer and cartoonist alongside being a doctor. He was the elder brother of artist Binode Behari Mukherjee (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benode_Behari_Mukherjee). He finished his schooling from Hindu School (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_School,_Kolkata) Calcutta in 1963. Bhattacharya then qualified as a doctor by graduating from Calcutta Medical College in 1968.

Career

• Formerly Associate Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry, Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
• Formerly Dy. Superintendent Institute of Psychiatry (Nodal Centre for De-addiction program) Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
• Participated in International seminar & training course in hypnosis at Ahmedabad, Organized by Indian association of clinical & experimental hypnosis & received a certificate as a trainer in self hypnosis in 1984.
• Participated in master trainer course of the treatment and care of Torture Survivors under the guidance of Dr. Inge Genefke of rehabilitation & research Centre for torture victims. Dr. Bhattacharya demonstrated Yogic relaxation technique as an effective non drug method.
• Formerly Associate Editor of JIMA (Journal of Indian Medical Association consecutive), India during the period of 1993-97.
• Formerly Editor of popular-health journal “Your Health” (IMA Publication), 1990-1991.
• Dr. D. Bhattacharya was sponsored by India Govt. as the sole representative to present a paper and participate in Asia-Australia meet on Art Therapy at Melbourne University, Australia in 1912.
• Pioneer in establishing art therapy in India and published a book on behalf of IPS.
• Formally advisor of Task Force, Creativity & Mental Health, IPS for consecutive 2 years.
• Recognized as an contemporary Indian Artist by Lalitkala Academy in 1981.
• Dr. D. Bhattacharya worked at the interface of human mind and creativity and contributed in the book ‘Interfaces of Psychiatry’, (ed.: Vinay Kumar & Sandeep Grover, Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd. Edition, 1st. Year, 2023).
• Awarded for delivering L.P.Verma Oration on ART-THERAPY at 41st. Annual Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society (CEZIPS) on 9th. Oct.2015 at Shillong.
• Awarded for Karimnagar Oration at Prashanthi Hospital, Hydrabad, India on "Agenda of Art through ages"
• Awarded for lifetime achievement by Indian Psychiatric society, WB State branch for the year 2023.
• Awarded for presentation on Art as therapy at Bengal Boston Bridge on 21 January' 2023, at AFA, Kolkata, India.

On 7th.Aug’2017. IMA Behala Branch organised Multidisciplinary Scientific Conference of IMA Academy of specialities. Delivered the oration on : ‘DEPRESSION – Let’ s talk : NON DRUG APPROACH
Delivered: G. S Bose memorial oration on 30.01.2018 organized by IAPP & Indian Association of Psychoanalytic society. Tropic – Critical appraisal of psychoanalysis.
Presided the session on Psychoanalysis on 01.12.15. Dr. Sudhir Kakar speaking on ‘Psychoanalysis today’.
