Play Dirty is an upcoming American crime thriller film directed by Shane Black, and starring Mark Wahlberg as Parker, a character featured in a series of novels by Donald E. Westlake under his pseudonym Richard Stark. The film is produced by Amazon MGM Studios. Black is co-writer of the screenplay alongside Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi.

Premise

A thief gets a shot at a major heist where he must outsmart a South American dictator, the New York mob, and the world’s richest man.[1]

Development

Amazon MGM Studios, Team Downey and Shane Black began working together on the project in March 2022, with Black having adapted a script from the Richard Stark novels with Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi, with Black set as director.[2] Producers included Susan Downey for Team Downey and Marc Toberoff, with Ezra Emanuel as co-producer.[3] Amazon Studios and Shane Black were working with producer Joel Silver on the project before Silver was replaced by Jules Daly in November 2023.[1]

Casting

Robert Downey Jr. was attached to the film as an actor prior to Mark Wahlberg's involvement.[4]

In January 2024, LaKeith Stanfield joined the cast of the film, portraying Grofield.[5] Rosa Salazar also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.[6] In February, Dermot Mulroney and Tony Shalhoub joined the cast in undisclosed roles.[7] In March, Keegan-Michael Key, Nat Wolff, Chukwudi Iwuji, and Thomas Jane joined the cast in undisclosed roles.[8]

Filming

Principal photography began on March 19, 2024, in Sydney Harbour.[9][10] Filming locations include Ku-ring-gai Council.[11]
